Sansar is the latest creation for consumer VR from Linden Labs, the company behind Second Life. Build for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets, Sansar is “less like different parts of a single world and more like the Web, with individual sites that you can navigate to directly” says Linden Labs CEO Ebbe Altberg. The business model will still involve leasing virtual land like Second Life, but those fees are said to be much lower. No exact price has been announced for that as of yet.
To date, both Linden Lab and an invite-only group of people have been building out different virtual experiences. Their hope is that users will be much more involved in the creation of environments to be available for use. A major hurdle to jump with Sansar is how to make these environments active enough so as not to get boring too quickly. John Artz of George Washington University voiced this concern when saying “while the technology behind it is good, it just gets boring after a while”. Only time will tell if Sansar will be the next big thing in consumer virtual reality.
