In the past year, consumers finally had the ability to purchase Virtual Reality technologies. Although new releases brought forth much excitement, VR products seemed to not live up to consumers’ expectations. These products received a lot of negative feedback.
Critics have explained these products:
- Remain clunky
- Make you dizzy
- Cut you off from the world around you
- Require fancy PCs
- Don’t have great content
The tech industry did not give up after the negative feedback. Virtual Reality was a big aspect of the CES tradeshow this past week in Las Vegas. Although, it is unknown whether new products and features in 2017 will address the major issues consumers have had with VR products. One thing is certain, the prices of these products are not decreasing anytime soon.
Apple is likely to jump into the VR market soon; however, it seems Apple may be more concerned with another concept – Augmented Reality. A very popular example of AR is the game, Pokemon Go. AR allows objects to be virtually layered on top of a physical environment.
Recently, Microsoft developed the HoloLens headset. This device is said to incorporate Windows into everyday life. The initial version of the HoloLens was priced at $3,000, but the ultimate price consumers will pay when the headset becomes mainstream is unknown.
Facebook’s main focus remains on VR. Although critics mention Facebook still isn’t where the company needs to be. As mentioned before, a popular concern with VR technology is that the products ultimately cuts users off from the world around you. However, if any company can address this problem, it is Facebook.
It will be interesting to see where these companies will go during 2017 and what kind of VR and AR technologies will be introduced.
