The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is a $45 billion philanthropic organization run by Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan. The CZI has recently made its first acquisition, Meta, an artificial intelligence run research paper search engine. They plan on offering Meta for free, once they are happy the product is working at its full potential.
Meta’s main purpose is helping scientists find the latest papers related to their own field of study. The cool part is how Meta does this. It used AI to recognize and identify authors and citations within papers so it can serve up the most important and relevant research instead of what just has the best SEO.
CZI is on a path to potentially solve one of science’s biggest problems. There are 2000-4000 scientific papers published EVERY DAY about biomedicine alone. Currently it is very difficult to search across these papers or even filter out which ones are simply reputable or not.
